From Rap music to Coupé Decalé

In the last years in West Africa, starting in Cote d’Ivoire, a group of new-kids-on-the-block have been producing some phenomenal dance music, like Rap did just before.

This music called “Coupé Decalé” is produced by a new kind of DJs with the same old “dance music” ingredients, but pushing it to the next level: the beats and groove, the lyrics borrowing from all the available influences, new dance styles and tricks (with funny names such as “décalé chinois” or “grippe aviaire”). Add to that the “show attidude” making it hot and special, which they call “boucant” (or “faro”) and that you can compare to the US-imported “bling bling”.

“Coupé Décalé” is the new thing ! It is having an important influence on the new generation of artists. Let’s not miss its importance. It means the hope that the African young people can produce great things if they are given the chance to, and not only in culture-related fields.

We need these artists to continue evolving their art, and create something that can influence back the entire modern African music. A suivre…
